Missy Elliott named VH1’s “All Hail The Queens” Hip Hop Honoree

VH1 is bringing back their show Hip Hop Honors after a six-year hiatus. This year’s theme is “All Hail The Queens” which is paying tribute to female pioneers, trailblazers, and trendsetters who made their mark in a male-dominated genre and let their voices be heard.

Queen Latifah, an obvious, choice was already announced as one of the honorees and yesterday, VH1 announced Missy Elliott as another honoree. Virgina-native Melissa “Missy” Elliott is a singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer who launched her solo career back in 1997 with the hit singles “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Sock It 2 Me”.

Elliott was actually an honoree of the 2007 VH1 Hip Hop Honors, (watch above) after which she seemingly disappeared from the limelight taking on some behind-the-scenes production work. She “resurfaced” however at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime performance, appearing with Katy Perry, which you watch below.

This honor is certainly well deserved to a queen who’s sold more than 30 million records, with six albums and five Grammy Awards. Curious to know who else will be honored? Make sure to catch the LIVE show on July 11 at 9pm EST.
