Today is a great day to be a Black woman in America!
Misty Copeland has been promoted to female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater, making her the first black female principal dancer in the company’s 75-year history.
The announcement comes after 14 years with the company and after having landed the cover of TIME earlier this year.
The 32-year-old had always voiced her aspiration to become the esteemed company’s first black female principal dancer and even expressed her fears that it would be another 20 years before another black woman rose to her rank in the company.
