The Candace in Me

By: Fallon Victoria

If you’re like me, you’ve been impatiently awaiting the return of Tyler Perry’s epic drama-filled series, The Haves and the Have Nots. You almost never know what to expect from Mr. Perry.  From the crazed, wickedly insane personality of Veronica, to the constantly evolving plot, no moment is predictable. And although the characters have distinctive personalities, they each have qualities that we can relate to.

images-9I can personally identify with the relationship between Candace Young and her mother Hanna. I’m not close to being  as wild as Candace but my mother and I experienced similar relationship dynamics. Like them, we were prideful and stubborn. But when it comes to those moments when Hanna begs for her daughter’s mercy, everything in me yells, “PLEASE FORGIVE HER!” I know its just TV but they have really sucked me in.

My mom and I had some crazy battles to overcome and I guess you can say I missed the mark with forgiving her, like Candace. I don’t know how their story will end but ours didn’t go so well. The Candace in me said some really hurtful things to my mother and it ended up being our last conversation. She died two days later, and my inner Candace had to die soon after in order to move forward with my life.

I so want Candace and Hanna to have a “come to Jesus” moment. And I look forward to seeing the development of their characters and relationship. Of course the show wouldn’t be the show without Candace’s shenanigans, and judging by the season’s preview, she’ll have plenty up her sleeves! But just for one moment in time, I’d like to see them get it right. #ForgivenessWins

Tune in to OWN tonight to catch the highly anticipated season premiere of Tyler Perry’s, The Haves and the Have Nots.
