The ladies are getting to the money for real! CNN reports that there will be a woman as the face of the redesigned $10 bill.
It has been a while since we’ve seen a woman on the United States currency…and when I say “A while since we’ve seen,” I mean, as for our generation, NEVER. The last woman on U.S currency was Martha Washington, who was on the $1 Silver Certificate between 1891 and 1896. Yes, that was probably way before any of our grandparents were born.
This age old issue of women being drowned in the shadow of the male species is finally breaking out of the darkness. The newly redesigned bills will be released in honor to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the U.S. This mean we will have to wait until 2020 to spend the fresh-faced bills.
There is no word just yet on who will be replacing Mr. Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bills. But I know one name that popped into everybody’s head when the words “money” and “women” came up. Oprah is somewhere smiling hard right now. Harriet Tubman’s name has been thrown around the subject a few times, too. Guess we will find out in a few months.
