Nickelodeon Proves to be Progressive & Controversial in Lesbian Ending for “Legend of Korra”

Homosexuality is nothing new. It is new, however, to Western animated series. Recently, Nickelodeon concluded Legend of Korra, sequel to its hit series Avatar The Last Airbender with an endearing scene hinting that there might be something more between two of its central characters, Korra and Asami.

The show concluded with the two friends deciding to go on vacation together into The Spirit World. Just as they prepare to enter the spirit portal, they turn and face each other, holding hands as romantic music begins to play and are spirited away. Sounds innocent enough right?  That is because it was. There was no hot girl on girl action, rainbow flag flying proudly in the background, or even a romantic kiss. Just two girls beginning something new and sweet.

Naturally, fans were left speculating what that final scene meant. The creators of the show came forward to confirm their suspicions–Korra and Asami are romantically interested in one another. Brian Konietzko came forward with the following statement:  “You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story. We received some wonderful press in the wake of the series finale at the end of last week, and just about every piece I read got it right: Korra and Asami fell in love. Were they friends? Yes, and they still are, but they also grew to have romantic feelings for each other.”

The ending has been met with mixed reviews. Many fans praised it for its progressive action while some Christian media has condemned it, feeling the show and Nickelodeon are pushing the homosexual agenda on children. Nickelodeon is not the first kids’ network to tackle same-gender love. Just last year Disney Channel showed a same sex couple on its hit show Good Luck Charlie. Clearly, it’s a new day and to show that true love is still love despite the gender of those involved is a powerful and daring lesson. Kudos to Legend of Korra!  It was an awesome series. Let’s hope these Netflix rumors for a third Avatar series are in the works! This universe and its amazing characters deserve to live on! Korrasami forever!
